The Friends of the Barrett Library is dedicated to enhancing the library experience for our community. We aim to promote literacy, education, and a love for reading through various programs and events. Our goal is to help advance the mission and meet the needs of the Kate Waller Barrett Library.
The Barrett Branch Library was built in 1937 and named in honor of Kate Waller Barrett, a humanitarian, social equality crusader, and political reformer. Barrett Branch serves the Old Town section of Alexandria.
The Special Collections Division of the Alexandria Library is located at the Barrett Branch Library and houses many resources for historians, genealogists, and others interested in local and American history.
The Special Collections Division holds a variety of materials in multiple formats, including books, microfilm, microfiche, journals, manuscript collections and photographs.
The books and media that you donate to the Library are sold at the Friends of Barrett Library book sales. The proceeds from these sales are used to fund various programs, expand our collections, and acquire the latest technology that we would not otherwise be able to afford. Your donations significantly contribute to the Library’s efforts to serve our entire community.
We are an organization of volunteers committed to supporting our local library. We raise funds primarily through book sales, membership dues, and your donations. Proceeds help support children’s and adult programs and to purchase equipment and materials that enhance library services. We need and welcome your support.
We meet at the Barrett Branch Library the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm.
