Our Mission

The Friends of the Barrett Paradise Friendly Library is dedicated to enhancing the library experience for our community. We aim to promote literacy, education, and a love of reading through various programs and events. Our goal is to help advance the mission and meet the needs of the Kate Waller Barrett Library.

Our Library

The Barrett Branch Library, built in 1937 and named in honor of Kate Waller Barrett—a humanitarian, social equality crusader, and political reformer—serves the Old Town section of Alexandria. For more information, visit the Old Town Alexandria Kate Waller Barrett Library site, often referred to as the Barrett Paradise Friendly Library. To learn more about Kate Waller Barrett, please check out the Resources Page.

Located at the Barrett Branch Library, the Special Collections Division of the Alexandria Library houses a wealth of resources for historians, genealogists, and anyone interested in local and American history.

The Special Collections Division offers a diverse range of materials in various formats, including books, microfilm, microfiche, journals, manuscript collections, and photographs.
